One of my favorite things in the entire world is spending time with my son. In January 2011, about two months before my son’s fifth birthday, we were playing in the backyard together when I realized I was struggling to keep up with him. I had to take frequent breaks because I was gasping for air and couldn’t catch my breath. If I was struggling to keep up with him at age 35 when he was only four years old, what would happen as he continued to grow?
I decided that night I was going to turn things around. At that point I weighed nearly 270 pounds, had 40% bodyfat and a 40-inch waist. Over the course of the next year I shed 85 pounds. I was much healthier, but too skinny and decided to focus my energy on adding back some lean mass. Little by little over the last two years I have added approximately 20 pounds of lean mass and have experienced massive gains in strength and conditioning. During that time I also was hired to work as a trainer at The Omni Club in Athens, GA.
In late 2012, a client of mine mentioned that he wanted to run a Spartan Race and asked me to run with him. We made a deal – if he followed the plan and met certain milestones in his training and diet, I would run the event with him. He held up his part of the bargain so I registered and ran the event with him in March, 2013. I was instantly HOOKED. The combination of running, endurance, strength and overcoming obstacles and fear made for an adrenaline rush unlike anything I’d ever experienced. Before I went to bed that night I’d already registered to compete in more races and ended up competing in 23 events over the course of the year.
In the three years since, I have competed in close to 80 events in 14 different states with distances ranging from as short as 3.1 miles to as long as 38+ miles with over a mile of vertical climb. I have completed the Spartan Ultrabeast on three separate occasions and will be competing for the podium in that event at this year's Spartan World Championship in Tahoe. I will also be running World's Toughest Mudder - a 24 hour event where athletes try to cover as many laps as possible.
